 These are fortnightly insights to the important developments to your unborn child

Week 6

Earliest point to detect multiple pregnancy
Two tubes have now joined together at the heart and now the
heart beats around 100-115 beats per minute (bpm)
and the nerves have begun to grow the eyes and mouth are just beginning to form
The pancreas and intestines are developing.
 
  Week 8

 Expansion of the ventricular system of the
Heartbeat around 144-159 bpm the length of the embryo is approx 3-5 mm (half and inch)webbed toes are now forming.
The embryo's facial features are becoming more refined.
 
Week 10

Head is clearly divided from the body by neck
intestines begin to move to abdominal cavity
After 8 weeks from conception the baby is now called a fetus,
Fingers and toes slowing becoming separated the inner ear is now completely formed and the outer ear continues to develop the eye lids have formed and are closed over the eyes,
Fetus is approx 26 -30 mm long and is comprised of approx 93% water,
 
 Week 12

 The baby now has a clearly human profile, and has advanced to the stage  that its brain can transmit messages;
 Very soft nails have begun to grow on the fingers and toes
Possible diagnosis of abdominal wall defects such as gastroschisis and omphalocele
   
Week 14

Diagnosis of central nervous system anomalies with vaginal or abdominal scan
Nose is developing the arch
Nuchal translucencies can be measures from 11-14 weeks, and any abnormality in size will lead to further testing. The liver now secretes bile and the pancreas secretes insulin
The diaphragm can contract at this stage and cause hiccups
  Facial movements now also visible  The heart beat is now strong enough to hear with a Doppler or heat monitor,
  
 Week 16

Fetal spine visible ultrasound able to detect neural tube defects
 The baby urinates in amniotic fluid, then starts swallowing amniotic fluid,
which demonstrates kidney function.
 Early hair or ( lanugo  hair soft downy hair) is visible now on the scalp
The baby's head still makes up about half of its total body length.
 Independent mouth movements, the heart beat now sits at approximately 150 bpm
at this stage the baby's sex is  evident,
 
Week 18

  Routine ultrasound scan at 18-20 weeks to diagnose congenital malformations, exclude multiple pregnancies, verify birthdates and growth, confirm sex of the fetus, anatomical survey and analyze maternal well-being.you may begin to experience  baby moving from here, The eyes and ears are now forming in the correct position.
 Your baby may now be sucking its thumb and swallowing small amounts of the amniotic fluid.
Finger prints and foot prints are now developing for life.
 
Week 20

The half way mark

Baby now weighs approx 400 grams and is roughly 16cm in length And the spine is approximately 10 cm long, Tooth buds noted. 
Malformations in brain can be diagnosed accurately by this time the spinal cord and brain have connected,
A cheesy coating called vernix will begin forming to protect the baby’s skin from the amniotic fluid
 
 
Week 22

 Salivary glands form
The head is about 19cm  The baby's grasp reflex is strong  
if you begin to feel the gently rythmitic movements in your belly  don’t worry
Your baby may well have hiccups,
Now your baby is making REM  (Rapid eye movements)
  
Week 24

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) fetus can be evaluated for suspected growth restrictions by comparing current and previous measurements
Baby can react to sharp movements or loud noises at this stage
Baby can be evaluated for macrosomia, growth beyond a specific weight
(usually 4000-4500 grams) the baby's lean body is putting on fat
 
 
Week 26

The baby's small size and ample amounts of surrounding amniotic fluid allow for freedom of movement baby's skin now is quite wrinkled and red colored as the fat is deposited into the face the wrinkles will soften. tiny air sacs called alveoli forming the lungs and the baby begins to make primitive breathing movements
physical response to sound and touch weighs approx 800 grams baby's first bowel movements (Meconium) are collecting in the in the bowel
 
 Week 28

90 days to go

Eyes and nostrils have become un-fused and opened up and the baby is able to perceive light, smell and taste, baby weighs just over one kilogram
Rate of growth for twins slower than rate of growth for singletons after this time.
any baby born after today stands a very good chance of surviving, it is formed enough to take the first breath of life.  Developing muscles and becoming more active
 
Week 30

  If the baby is male the testicles have  now dropped into the scrotum  this will take a few weeks to complete. Baby weighs approx 1.2 kilograms
baby begins to "kick" which is like stepping movements and is now placing his head to the pelvis of mum, baby weighs approx 1.5 kilo's
during the next few weeks mums immunities will be transferred to the baby, to assist the baby’s immune system when born,
 
Week 32

Fetal bladder volume 10 ml (at 40 weeks, it will quadruple)
The umbilical cord is approx 45 centimeters long
Baby is now capable of giving a weak cry! And is moving into the position of being born most likely in the head down position,
And now the stomach is capable of emptying its contents,
 
Week 34

 Mother possibly has 3rd trimester ultrasound to evaluate fetal size and growth
Baby now weighs about 2 kilo's and is approx 45cm from heat to toes and is now starting to prepare for life outside th womb b storing iron in its liver. , Baby has full suckling facilities required for survival. And now spends more time in fixed postures,
 
 
 Week 36

 Baby is preparing for life outside the womb is approx 2.6 kilo's and is about 47-48 centimeters in length.
 The baby’s kidneys are complete, and now can have a strong grip on your finger
Now is also the time that baby responds and turns towards light
But will not be able to focus properly until after the baby is born.
The uterus has grown from 7 centimeters to 28 centimeters in diameter to hold the baby
 
 
Week 38

Presence of free floating particles of vernix (the waxy coating around the fetus)
 On real time ultrasonography may confirm fetal maturity baby now weighs approx 3 kilograms and is about 34 centimeters from head to toe.
The colour of a newborns eyes is normally light blue or grey, but the colour will stabilize after the first 9 months of birth  
The baby’s lungs are now mature and the baby is practicing breathing in preparation for its first breath of air.

Week 40

Congratulations your baby has grown form one tiny cell to over 200 million cells
Baby has experienced rapid growth in the final weeks
Birth the average baby is 3.5 kilos
the nails have reached the end of the fingers/toes
